Local high school students collaborate with treering to create their inaugural yearbook

A Lasting Memento of an Extraordinary Accomplishment

[SAN MATEO, CA, June 15, 2023] Treering Yearbooks – an innovative San Mateo-based company focused on making yearbooks accessible to all students – partnered with the San Mateo Union High School District Bridge program (SMUHSD Bridge) to build the program’s first-ever yearbook. Using Treering’s user-friendly software and donation feature, every student ended the school year with a book filled with cherished memories celebrating their unique journey.

As a school dedicated to fostering inclusivity and embracing diversity,  San Mateo Union High School District Bridge program newcomer students face the challenges of adapting to a new educational system and a different language. Most are unaccompanied newcomers from Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico. Many come to the U.S. to flee violence or to reunite with a family member. Students range in age from 16 to 18, and 95% also work full-time to support family in their home countries.  The students and staff worked together to build the first-ever program yearbook using Treering’s collaborative software. All yearbooks were purchased utilizing Treering’s donation feature; no student had to pay for a book.

Recognizing the importance of documenting experiences and achievements, Cristina Gutierrez, SMUHSD Bridge yearbook editor and Social Science teacher, embarked on an ambitious endeavor to create a physical reminder to honor the student’s remarkable journey. With Treering’s new donation option, Gutierrez encouraged parents, teachers, and community members to donate yearbooks from their smartphones or computers. The yearbook not only preserves cherished memories but also serves as a testament to the students' resilience, determination, and growth throughout their first year in a new country.

"Yearbooks are powerful. Designing our yearbook with Treering meant students could participate in the creation and take away valuable skills like graphic design, photography, and storytelling that can be used later in life. Now they have a physical reminder of their Bridge experience. Fiestas, home country Independence Days, soccer league championships, and awards ceremonies - all our memorable moments are included," explains Gutierrez.

Schools Can Now Invite Community Members to Donate Yearbooks to the School

SAN MATEO, CA — Treering Yearbooks – a company modernizing traditional yearbooks – enables schools across America to make yearbooks accessible to all students by integrating a new online donation option.

As the season of giving commences, it’s the perfect time for schools to rally together their communities and provide the gift of lifelong memories to students. When the donation feature is enabled, books can be purchased and donated directly to the school through Treering’s website. Yearbooks are a portal to the past; a book that captures the best moments from childhood and tells the story of the formative chapters of life.

Janet Yieh, Family Partnerships Coordinator at Presidio Middle School in San Francisco, CA, utilizes fundraisers as well as Treering’s early purchase incentive to ensure that every 8th grader graduates with a yearbook. With Treering’s new donation option, Yieh can encourage parents, teachers and community members to join the initiative and donate yearbooks directly from their smartphones or computers.

“The Treering donation feature allows me to create yearbook giveaway contests throughout the school year. It susses out students who might not be able to afford a book and don’t want to ask for a free one. I want every 8th grader who wants one to leave with a yearbook,” explains Yieh.

The advertiser-gleam: dar – young crew steps up for yearbook

The DAR yearbook crew has a mentoring program where seniors show the ropes of yearbook work, particularly photography, to the sophomores and juniors coming up in the program. It gives the program a sense of continuity and it paid off in a big way earlier this fall when DAR held its annual Dedication Day.

Dedication Day is one of the biggest events of the year at the school, when DAR members from all over the United States come to the campus to dedicate gifts and pledge funds for various school projects. So
it gets strong coverage in the yearbook.

Seniors are eligible to serve as pages or personal assistants to the visiting DAR and being selected as a page is considered a huge honor. Every senior on the yearbook staff was selected as a page. So it was up to the younger members of the yearbook crew to handle most of the coverage of Dedication Day. They were up to the task thanks to the mentoring program.

Taylan Franks and Elizabeth Hammett are the editors. They said they’d been training the younger members since last year.

“We’d talked about how to make the pictures, select the best pictures and set it up in the yearbook,” Taylan said. “We had done a lot of brainstorming.”

The young ladies said they are pretty much the main editors, watching over everyone else, but everyone in the program under teacher Dr. John Finley can take on any task.

DAR changed to a new yearbook company last year, Treering, and Taylan and Elizabeth said it makes things easier than it used to be.

“Everything is new, so we have been watching a lot of tutorials and teaching ourselves,” Elizabeth said.

They got rave reviews on last year’s yearbook, but this one might end up being even better.

“Treering offers personal pages,” Dr. Finley said. “The student purchasing the yearbook gets to personalize those pages themselves. It makes for a one-of-a-kind yearbook."

It's two pages in the yearbook that the student purchasing gets to customize for their book. And, he said, it will be about $20 cheaper than the yearbooks provided by the school's old company.

The yearbook class is also something of an entrepreneurial class. They started doing all the photography packages for the school. They were finishing that up lately. They will try to have much of that work done by the Christmas break.

"Taylan and Elizabeth have done a good job of getting everyone trained," Dr. Finley said. "The value of that really showed up on Dedication Day."

It's not just school events like Dedication Day that they're photographing. They also photograph sporting events and they film them and narrate the action as a part of the program's audio-visual component.

"The juniors and sophomores have been watching and learning from the seniors," Dr. Finley said. "They stepped in on Dedication Day and got all the photographs. You have to remember that there's no room for error."

Yearbooks go on sale after Christmas break.

The sentinal: emphasizing diversity and culture for gwynn park high school’s yearbook

By LaShunda Nugent, Yearbook Adviser at Gwynn Park High School

I’m fortunate to wear many hats at Gwynn Park High School, some of which include: 10th and 11th grade English teacher, English Department Chair, social media manager and yearbook sponsor. Since high school, I’ve been passionate about yearbook creation and now that I have my own class of students interested in yearbook, it’s an opportunity to show them all that the book can represent. Further, I’ve always been interested in graphic design, so getting involved in the yearbook was an easy decision for me!

In my role as an educator, placing a focus on diversity is so important, and there are myriad opportunities within a school system to make that happen. Teaching diversity opens students’ eyes to a variety of cultural and social groups, right in their own community. In the past, our school’s yearbook has put an emphasis on mainly highlighting seniors and their achievements. Showcasing seniors’ memories before they graduate is a common practice for many schools, but in my role as yearbook adviser, I want to help redefine the yearbook and remind our students no matter their grade, involvement in extracurricular activities, etc., there is still room for them to shine within the pages!

Using the yearbook-making tool Treering has allowed the yearbook class to further showcase all students at Gwynn Park High School—not just seniors. In previous years, there wasn’t a lot of excitement around yearbook creation or how inclusive it could actually be. It’s been exciting to shift the culture at the school to remind everyone that the book is for every student and every staff member. Instilling the importance of diversity is so important, and the yearbook is one way to make inclusion a reality. For this year’s yearbook class in particular, we’ve instilled the mindset of “everyone is going to be in the book.”

This year’s design will represent the school’s unity and highlight how we’re all experiencing a new normal—everything new and different—due to the impact of the pandemic. The book will include our newer students’ experiences (freshman and sophomores) as well as the changes from the junior and seniors’ and even staff members' perspectives on returning to the in-person classroom setting after the sudden departure from the school building. The hope is that the inclusion of everyone’s common experiences in the book will bring forth a sense of togetherness within the school’s community.

Treering matches $37,500 in donations for trees for the future on giving tuesday

SAN MATEO, Calif. Treering, a technology company that offers high-quality yearbooks at affordable prices, today announced it will match $37,500 in donations to Trees for the Future as part of its matching gift campaign for Giving Tuesday on Nov. 30, 2021. This match will contribute a total of $75,000 to Trees for the Future to help further its mission to end hunger and poverty by training farmers to regenerate their land.

“This partnership is one more way our team can help make student experiences be even more impactful,” said Kevin Zerber, CEO and co-founder at Treering. “Through our one book printed, one tree planted model with Trees for the Future, we can help lay a sustainable foundation for future generations while preserving students’ memories in a yearbook that they will keep for a lifetime. With donations such as this, we're collectively supporting farming families, while also providing more meals to children and more access to education and healthcare.”

Treering is the only matching gift campaign partner for Trees for the Future for this year’s event. Trees for the Future works with farmers to restore degraded landscapes through regenerative agriculture practices. Through farmer training, Trees for the Future is fighting hunger, poverty, and climate change. Zerber said his company chose to team up with this organization because they share a common goal of protecting our environment and providing sustainable solutions for future generations.

“With the holiday season right around the corner and industries of all sizes looking to participate in this year’s Giving Tuesday, we’re honored that Treering has committed  to a matching gift campaign,” said John Leary, Executive Director at Trees for the Future. ”Not only does this type of gift mean hundreds of thousands of trees planted and many lives changed, a matching gift helps encourage others to give, making Treering’s support that much more impactful.”

Treering’s model is set up with sustainability in mind because it operates at zero cost to schools and only prints books parents/guardians decide to purchase. Schools often accumulate debt with traditional yearbook companies because they commonly insist on minimum order quantities and impose extra fees, leaving schools with extra yearbooks that are never purchased. The affordability, fundraising options and sustainability initiatives - for every yearbook sold, a tree is planted - Treering is an option for schools that not only want to preserve memories, but also include all students in an eco-friendly yearbook.
